A struggling poet, Vijay (Guru Dutt), rejected by petty magazine editors and cast out by family members wanders the streets, unemployed and homeless. Lying on a park bench, he hears a feminine voice humming one of his verses. Gulab (Waheeda Rehman), a prostitute leads him on singing one of his own poems.
