Ragging has been a longtime issue, especially marking the social
lives of young undergrads in India. Over the recent couple decades
however, the rowdyism involved has proliferated unbidden, and the
gravity of the matter has hence drawn much addressing and action at
various levels.
In accord with which, Bollywood comes up with a
concept unexplored previously, bringing forth the solemn situation and
its many perils.
For the uninitiated, ragging defines tasks assigned by senior
students to freshers - which as by norm were merely in the lighter vein.
The nuisance of ragging in recent times however has ranged from being
beaten up to being molested, even raped by seniors. The latter of issues
often remains unattended, much less duly punished, because the victims
remain subdued, fearful and/or too ashamed to come up front, confess and
complain. Unfortunately, the one year freshers, become next years'
seniors, and the cycle continues to exist like a vicious circle.
Bollywood's upcoming film
Hostel is based of this very
same problem that continues to plague the lives of many young students
in the current educational set up.
