Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has hit out at critics of Danny Boyle's Oscar nominated rags
to riches drama 'Slumdog Millionaire', saying it shows India in a 'visually appealing way'.
Contactmusic.com reports that Shah Rukh, who was earlier offered the role of the quiz master in the film, played by Anil Kapoor, has defended the film.
Shah Rukh said: 'I think it's really nice that the film will open doors for people to understand that there is a lot of visual appeal to India.
'I hear a lot of people saying that India has been shown in bad light. But then my logic to everyone is that why is it that somebody comes from outside and makes a film like 'Gandhi' and 'Slumdog Millionaire' and it becomes internationally acceptable. All we can say about it is that it is showing India in a poor light.'
The multi award-winning film has repeatedly come under fire since its release, with campaigners in India slamming the movie's controversial title, claiming the use of the word 'dog' is insulting to those living in slums.
The filmmaker was also accused of under paying the Indian child artistes despite director Boyle vigorously denying the claims, insisting the studio paid to ensure the welfare of the actors.

reality check...
slums are a reality...its no good hiding them, another actor slammed the movie, maybe cos they didn''t take him on board...but whatever it maybe, only cos u live in posh bungalows u can''t ignore the majority
Oh i agree on this one thing w/ srk!
Slumdog is AMAZING moviee!! My friends here...infact whole school is crazy about it...every1 loved it...
And guys the theme is on Slums...i mean if they only had to show the wealth...it wouldn''t have made the movie hit coz u see wealth in all hollywood movies...its nothing new! And i agree to ppl...THIS IS HAPPENING IN INDIA! It hurts to say this...but yes it is...if u still go in villages...you will see child abuse and trafficking...infanticide still occurs in india even though it is illegal! Agreed that it is happening less now and hardly in cities but it still occurs in villages!
We indians would never show that in cinema...so what they did? its truth... the only thing that offended me to the slightest bit is when an indian guy was beating teen jai and he was like...this is real india and an american lady protects him and is like u''ll see real america now!
No doubt that americans are really humble...but there are ppl in USA too who give a damn to humanity and behave really badly with kids...same way it is in india...it doesn''t mean that all indians are like that! That was the only offending part to me...
But overall the movie was spectacular...infact it will bring india in a different lime-light... it actually benefits india, its actors and film industry!
I really loved Slumdog Millionaire! One of the best movies of 2008!
PS: A.R.Rehman rockssss! :P All my foreign friends here loveeeeeeed his music!
@Priyanka..K let me explain
The reason..Why Slumdog was used
I believe it was..Derived from underdog
An underdog is..A person or group
Who is..Expected to lose.
The character..Is from the slums..Therefore
The under part..was replaced with Slum = Slumdog
The film celebrates..A loser..Who emerged 2b a winner
So that is why..Such a title was used
Try to understand things..Properly
Before jumpin on a bandwagon..Of
If only an..Indian had made it
Does that mean..Its a brilliant film?..n ur jst jealous?
Sheeesh...Aaj kal ki..Duniyaan mein bhi
Aisi baatein..Karte hain logh..Pleeese
If somethin is good..Admit its good
If somethin is bad..Admit its bad
If somethin is somewhat good n bad..Admit it is that
Par don''t bring in..If it had been made by..So n so
Because no matter what u say..Danny n his team
Had the courage 2make it..So kuddos 2them
Can someone please..Re-write this article
Sort out the grammar n all..SRK is supporting the film
Par this^ is confusing many ppl
I jst wanna say..Hypocrisy n poverty
Need to be..Eradicated
Slumdog has @ least..Brought some awareness
Danny had no intention of..offendin any1
He has a lot of..Respect for india like many ppl
Of non-asian origin
Par ppl r behavin..Racistly 2wards him
Which is sad..Where has all da talk of..Humanity gone?
Joh hain woh hain..Der r faults in every country
We jst need 2 admit it..N hav the courage 2 recitfy
Our past mistakes..Aur bring about change..That''s all
i am quoting someone here: Why couldn''''t they show how fast India is developed and thus is soon becoming a developed country also! Couldn''''t he show the good part of it?
yes, indeed but was that the theme of the movie? In 3 hrs or however long it was you can only tackle the main theme. What was shown remains a brutal truth & I don''t understand why its creating so much anger in everyone. Go outside your city & you''ll see things like this everyday. Are you angered then?? do you do anything about it?? NO!!! But now that someone specially---a non indian has shown you the mirror it fumes you. Double standards much! About showing the good parts of india haven''t you seen that enough in bollywood with our unrealistic happy endings. I am sorry to break your bubble but real life is nothing like that. There were a few bollywood movies made on 911 now if we are so offended by slumdog i think states should me mad too. how dare we show only their bad part. What about some movies that show foreigners as racists im sure they should be super angry about it too cuz we are not showing their good side
Honestly ppl get to reality & instead of all this criticism learn to appreciate a good work. If this bothers you so much get involved to get rid of slums--volunteer to make a difference!
yeah this exactly what I was tryna convince my friend in india but she won''t listen. she hated the movie even without watching it just because of stupid critics bashing such an amazing movie & the whole idea of making india look bad! like its really sad to know that some people still think this way. People really really need to open their minds!! there was nothing untrue in the movie & i think it was creating awareness rather than ppl being offended by it. So I wonder should Britishers really be offended by movies like lagaan, magal pandey n all that portray their brutal past? Seriously, if an Indian director made such a movie with everything the same & it made it this big no one would be complaining. India''s bad image is shown in all the gang-typa movies but they aren''t so bad after all cuz we Indians make them but if other ppl make them its just outrageous! isn''t it ppl
I wish too.SRK was in the hot..but its ok now
I wish Shahrukh was in the host instead of Anil lol, anyways good movie! :)
oops....i just reread the article and he actually defendin the movie my bad guys!!! He is right i agree with him..forget me callin him a two faced....my mistake...lol...well all of the other things above i said i meant it....
This movie was awesome....everyone in the US loved it. No one is sayin that India is bad....every country has a bad side to it....the US has areas like this too...they are also shown in movies...wat is the big deal??? This movie showed reality...it showed what people with poverty deal with. It showed how people can be monsters and yet at the same time some can be awesome. There is no reason to be offended by the title or anything....all of these people who are makin a big deal about little things have no life....no offense it is tru...this movie was for entertainment.....and for a little hit with reality in it....why get so upset when only reality is shown in the movie??
The director did an awesome job with the movie....so did AR raheman, Dev patel, the little cute kids, freida pinto, anil kapoor, and of course all of the other actors.
As for Shah rukh he needs to stop being such a two face....he came to the GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS THIS YEAR AND came up on stage with Freida Pinto. He spoke good things about the movie...he basically promoted it. Why is he all talkin the other way now??
