DJ Bolli Speaks: The Mashup Edition!

Have you been noticing or has there been a new trend forming? First, we used to have to cut and paste and mix up songs on our own to create dance tracks and remixes. It was the job of the DJ at the party standing in the corner to spin discs and make one track blend into another.

But now? Now the movies are doing it themselves! Haila, ab mera kya hoga? DJ B ko naukri se nikala ja raha hai?

Nah, just kidding. I'm not going anywhere.

Lekin sach toh hai, that recent music albums of movies include that one extra track, the one that you're unsure if it works or not. That track that makes you want to dance, yet frustrates you because the next line never seems to come. Jee haan, I'm talking about the Mash Up tracks!

It started with Student Of The Year, and that was a fun idea, seamlessly putting together the tracks of the entire movie into one solid musical number. Then Race 2 did it, and Aashiqui 2, and now everyone is doing it. The music is good, the mixing flawless, but the novelty is wearing off. I cannot believe I am saying this, but I miss the days of having to scour the internet for a good mash-up.

Truth be told, I don't see the mashups going anywhere. The genre (and yes, it is a genre all on its own and no one can tell me otherwise) is a great concept and here to stay because there will always be the one person trying to fit a thousand and one songs into one five-minute track, and I am okay with that. I just want the music directors of the movies to stop spoon-feeding us their mash-ups! Let the DJs and the fans exercise their creativity.

Or, let us mash-up your mash-ups and you cannot complain about it.

What do you think? Do you enjoy the mash-ups? Do you prefer the "official" mash-ups to the ones DJs world over put together for you? Or do you enjoy the songs separately and not pieced together like an elaborate musical jigsaw puzzle? DJ B wants to know!
