Paying Homage to Silk Smitha?

Vijayalakshmi, better known as 'Silk Smitha', was a popular actress whose name finds stellar recognition in South Indian cinema. Among her immortal portrayals was a phenomenal character in a movie called Vandi Chakkaram, and her performance was such that from then on, people began to refer to her as her movie character - 'Silk Smitha'!

Like any other celebrity, the road to success wasn't easy and she faced many ups and downs along the way. In this 'Silk Smitha's' case, a reputation that followed her persistently involved her enactment of extremely sensual performances. Unfortunately but expectantly, directors took advantage of her boldness and began to offer exceedingly lewd roles to her, which she couldn't decline due to financial needs. Many still find injustice in the image she was given. 'Silk Smitha's unfortunate demise dates back to September 23, 1996, a suicide, prior to which she had suffered a lethal alcohol addiction.

Bollywood will now pay homage to this gifted but misunderstood star, in the form of a dedicatory movie that will illustrate Silk Smitha's eventful and controversial life. The movie will be produced by Ekta Kapoor, and is to be directed by Milan Luthria. Non-confirmed sources claim that Vidya Balan is to play 'Silk Smitha' herself. Through her performance, Vidya will reproduce the story of Silk Smitha's life, and will portray the strains of societal and industrial pressure that Vijayalakshmi underwent.

Since Ms. Balan hasn't confirmed the news herself, it may be too early to get excited. But we at BC are more than convinced about Vidya fitting the role. Hasn't she come back time and again to portray categoric feminist roles and prove her comfort and excellence in donning the garb of her characters.

Waiting then, we are, to watch Vidya play Vijya!
