Valentines Day - Most Romantic Scenes IV

Comments  Comments [ 49 ]    By Naseem J. | 10 February 2011 | 12:25am

After another mixed response day (we seem to alternate between good and bad when the intention is only trying to get variety on the platter) here come the next two scenes, for Day 4.

We have to admit, coming to the single digit ranks in the top 14 has really tightened the competition, and that calls for all you loyal fans to root even harder for the scenes you would wish to see in the final and top 6 scenes of this countdown.

Meanwhile, enjoy today's share of this trip down the decade, 2001-2010.

Movie: Vivah (2006: Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao)
Scene: Sindoor Scene

Here comes a hard core Bolly lovers' dream come true romantic scene! Vivah, a much needed blockbuster in Shahid's then drooping career graph was as typical a love story, as any of Bollywood's mega hit family dramas could have been. And it was hence, just as much a success as BO.

The storyline traces the journey of a couple, Poonam (Amrita) and Prem (Shahid) - who meet for matrimonial set up in an 'arranged' manner, and come about to fall deeply in love with each other - from being engaged to being married.  It shows in a traditionally innocent way, the inner inhibitions and anticipations of both the lead characters, Poonam a middle class girl and Prem an upper class business family guy, through the wait, and some unexpected tests of time.

And our 'most romantic' scene here, from among quite a few choices within this same movie, is what has come to be famously tagged the sindoor scene! At the threshold of finally tying the knot, a night before the auspicious date in an unfortunate fire at her household, Poonam suffers some severe burns and is admitted to the emergency. While Prem, as soon as he learns of the horrific incident rushes to his love, Poonam is all withdrawn with her fear of not being up to his mark as a life partner any longer, given the damage to her physical appearance. However, Prem, proving his love to have been no frivolity adorns the maang of his to-be-bride with the red sindoor thereby declaring his biggest vow of marriage there and then.

And although, like all typical Bollywood movies, this one too does have a perfectly happy ending with Poonam surviving out of a miraculous operation which heals her entirely, and the duo getting happily married eventually, the hospital scene is what stands out phenomenally in having been a test of the engaged lovers in a natural circumstance that neither could have helped.

A much loved scene, especially by the ardent and loyal fans of this onscreen jodi of Shahid and Amrita!

Movie: Hum Tum (2004 Saif Ali Khan , Rani Mukherjee)
Scene: Almost shaadi...!

Kunal Kohli's Hum Tum, plot wise exceedingly similar to the English blockbuster When Harry Met Sally, is the story of two individuals who meet, and meet again, and meet yet again... quite a few times, coincidentally and eventually by plan before finally becoming friends, and then falling in love.

Karan (Saif) and Rhea (Rani) are two individuals poles apart in nearly every way imaginable. One such a boy, and the other such a girl! The cupid philosophy of opposites attract takes its own sweet time to happen between them. And through the journey of crossing each others paths of life, time and again, the two characters bring forth some full on entertainment and drama, and many jolly moments.

The scene which we chose as our 'most romantic' from this movie was Filmfare's Best Scene for the year 2004. It is the comic and ironic exchange between Karan and Rhea, where they play pretend to being set up for an arranged marriage. A pretense, that goes from being an act, to seemingly so real, that it ends up in an awkward little hesitance - but one that makes a viewer's heart go out to the duo, wishing for them to get together there and then!

A widowed Rhea of some years returns to India from Paris, and is happy to be back to the place she had been escaping after her husband, Sameer's death. Karan casually questions the point of her ever having wished to be away in the first place, before apologizing for his unintentionally hurtful reminder. Rhea's response to his rhetoric is however, surprisingly calm and not offended. She explains having had to go away to not be pushed into getting married a second time, and going through all the rut. She declares that her love for Sameer has not died with him, and it shall always be. Reasonably enough, Karan points out that moving on has to happen, this way or that. Which is what brings the two 'friends' to the discussion of viability of an arranged marriage.

It is herein, that to prove his point in an absolutely light discussion, Karan draws her for the image of being a pretend prospective groom for her,  and convinces her to be game and join the act. They spin off lines as if meeting for the first time, and trying to get to know each other. Questions of changing cities and adjusting, or working wives or not... and a question pertaining to kids.

It is then, while drawing the picture perfect family - with kids and a dog called Tommy who would be spoiled by Karan and cared for by Rhea, that they inevitably chance upon a close and awkward moment where Karan declares he shall always and foremost love her, Rhea, before everything and everyone else.

They pull apart, each suddenly past the drama and hesitant, and Karan in trying to make ligt of the moment exclaims ... dekha? Ye arranged marriages ke baare mein baat karna kitna asaan hai? Humari almost shaadi hogayi thi...!

An abrupt culmination to their scene of building castles in the air which a die hard romantic could watch forever! In an adrobaly oblivious way, Karan comes forth candid about his love for Rhea, even as both of them are far from understanding much less acknowledging this mutual feeling.

A scene extremely well enacted by Rani and Saif, and well deserved of its Filmfare credential!
