Bollywood: A Male Dominated Industry?

Many have been speculating the influx of new faces across established actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Amir Khan, etc in films lately. One wonder is Bollywood a male dominated world? Is it true that the actor can pull in more audiences than an actress into movie theatres? Whether it was last year’s Om Shanti Om which introduced Deepika Padukone or this year’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and now Ghajini, many big budget films are seeing leading actors with new ladies. Does the actor have more star power than an actress? Can Shah Rukh Khan or Amir Khan attract more audiences than Rani Or Ash?

Bollywood: A Male Dominated Industry

Its interesting to note that even while listing the star cast of a film, the leading actor’s name tends to go before the actress’. Talented actresses like Sushmita Sen, Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta and many more are just not being offered films as more and more new faces join the industry. And once these new actresses establish themselves in a few movies will many roles be offered to them?

An established actor can give a few flops and still stay in the industry but when Madhuri or Rani gives a flop, that is not forgiven. An example being that many who had approached Rani for endorsements are now backing out due to the dismal outcome of her films this year. But Shahid, Shah Rukh, Akshay, Amitabh and almost every actor in the Indian film industry has gone through phases of flop movies but their star power remains the same. We have always questioned whether we are living in a male dominated society but is that reflection also being seen in Bollywood? Are actresses nothing but glamour dolls with no star power, which can be replaced by new faces again and again? Share your opinion with us….
