Today BollyCurry brings to you the birthday celebration of a great actress who has always chosen movies and roles outside of the mainstream market. We are talking of none other than Kangana Ranaut who turns 27 today!

Born on 23rd March, 1987 to Asha Ranaut, a school teacher, and Amardeep Ranaut, a businessman, Ranaut is a Rajputian. She has two siblings: an elder sister, Rangoli, and a younger brother, Akshit. She completed her schooling in Dehradun but left college with the aspiration of becoming a model and in 2003, the curly-haired beauty became a member of the Elite Modelling Agency.

Ranaut began her acting career as a theatre actor as part of the Asmita Theatre Group in Delhi where she was trained under theatre director Arvind Gaur. There she participated in several plays and workshops helping her to develop and hone in her skills.

In 2005, Ranaut moved to Mumbai and was subsequently noticed by Anurag Basu who cast her in the lead role of her debut film, Gangster (2006). The movie became a critical and commercial success thus making her the next big thing in Bollywood. As a result, she won several awards for her role including the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award as well as the IIFA Award for Best Female Debut. Ranaut followed it up with several other successful movies including Woh Lamhe (2006), Life In A Metro (2007) and Fashion (2008). Ranaut's portrayal of a supermodel in the latter, who loses everything under the pressure of success and therein becoming a substance abuser received her many awards including the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, the IIFA Best Supporting Actress Award and the prestigious National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Ranaut went on to star in more successful movies such as Raaz 2 - The Mystery Continues (2009), Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and Krrish 3 (2013). While she did not win any awards for her more recent films, the fashionable actress has been nominated several times for her various character portrayals. In between, Ranaut did face her set of failures with movies such as Vaada Raha (2009), Kites (2010), Rascals (2011), Tezz (2012) and Rajjo (2013).

Of her upcoming projects, Ranaut was recently seen in Queen. Ungli and Revolver Rani are expected to release later this year while I Love New Year, opposite Sunny Deol, was supposed to release on 30th December 2013 but has been postponed for an unscheduled date.
