Celebrity in the Spotlight: Deepika Padukone

It's that time of the month again, folks! This time caught under the scanners of BollyCurry is none other than the current reigning Queen of Bollywood. Ever since her debut in 2007, she has taken the industry by storm and to top it all, 2013's back to back hits belongs to this heroine. Her recent blockbuster, Chennai Express, smashed Indian Box Office records managing to rake in over Rs. 200 crores plus. Yes, we are talking about the one and only Deepika Padukone!

From modeling to a dream debut and now being an A-list actress in Bollywood, she has seen many highs with, of course, her share of lows.

Born to the famous badminton player, Prakash Padukone, and mother Ujjala Padukone, Padukone was raised and brought up in Bangalore. Throughout her school years, she played Badminton at the National Level Championships, but left her career in sports to become a fashion model. 2007 was the year her life changed as she debuted opposite Shah Rukh Khan in her first blockbuster, Om Shanti Om. She went to receive her first prestigious award for Best Debutante at the Filmfare awards.

Steady on the heels of her dream debut came a balanced phase when her films, Bachna Ae Haseeno, Housefull and Love Aaj Kal received mixed to positive feedback from critics and the audience alike. Even though these films were declared hits, they did not add much to her career. Her low began after when her roles in series of commercially unsuccessful films declined the graph of her career further. At one point, she was written off by many critics, however, it just helped this determinate lass to work harder and mark her name in the industry.

Cocktail, a 2012 hit, marked the turning point in Padukone's career. Not only did this film manage to do good business but it also earned her critical acclaim and Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies. In 2013, Padukone established herself in the industry by giving back to back hits starting from Race 2 with Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham, to Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani with Ranbir Kapoor, and her latest Chennai Express with Shah Rukh Khan. The latter two not only managed to rake in serious profits, but entered their names in the highest grossing movies of the year so far as well.

Padukone adopted a village named Ambegon in Maharashtra which was facing a major electricity crisis.

Padukone's upcoming list of movies include Ram Leela releasing on November 15th and Kochadaiiyaan, a film with the megastar Rajneekanth. Her next year consist of films such as Finding Fanny Fernandes and Happy New Year (currently being filmed).
