B&W Movies Re-released in Color!

Film colorization is a process which adds color to the dull black and white shades or monochrome pictures. This technique has been used to colorize some of the successful black and white releases of Bollywood while re-releasing them to charm that magic again.

The first Bollywood movie to be colorized was the epic romance of Salim and Anarkali. The Dilip Kumar-Madhubala starrer is considered to be a milestone in the history of Indian cinema. Originally released in 1960, Mughal E Azam was re-released in colored form in 2004. The film is an all-time blockbuster which was a critical and commercial success in both it's releases. Since some of the Hollywood movies colorized before this were only for home media, Mughal E Azam also became the first full-length feature film in the history of world cinema to be colorized for a theatrical release.

1957 Dilip Kumar-Vyjayanthimala starrer Naya Daur is set in post-independence India when the country was taking it's nascent steps towards industrialization.  It revolves around a tongawallah (horse-cart driver) who stands up against the injustice to himself and the other tongawallahs by the introduction of a bus-service. The competition between the two services forms the rest of the plot. Regarded as a blockbuster after it's original run, the film failed to create it's original magic when it was re-released in color in 2007.

Hum Dono (1961) stars Dev Anand in a double role of Mahesh Anand and Major Verma both of whom belong to the army. Major Verma goes missing during World War II and is believed to be dead. When Mahesh takes this news to the family, he is mistaken as Major Verma. The film deals with the complications which Mahesh has to deal with subsequently. The film was declared a hit on it's original release. 50 years later, it was re-released in color in 2011 and got lukewarm response.
