Top 10 Bollywood Movies based on Terrorism

Stepping away from the typical genre of movies, many directors have gone off the beaten path to show more realistic issues that affect today's community. On this Independence Day, BollyCurry brings you some of the controversial movies based on terrorism. Though mostly fictional, these movies show how terrorism can affect the lives of many and in what profound ways. So here's bringing you the Top 10 Bollywood Movies based on Terrorism:

 

Bombay
The Mani Ratnam directorial was released in Tamil in 1995 and later dubbed into Hindi. It tells the story of Shekhar (played by Arvind Swamy), a Hindu journalist, and Shaila (Manisha Koirala), a Muslim schoolgirl. The film focuses on their journey from falling in love in their village to their elopement to Bombay (now Mumbai) to their happy nuclear family. Just as they are trying to mend their relationship with their respective families, the religious tensions start escalating in Bombay putting their lives at stake. The latter half of the movie shows how the religious riots threatens the safety of their nontraditional family and how they cope when faced with the heinous acts of terrorism from both sides.

 

Dil Se
Another hard-hitting movie from Mani Ratnam, the Shahrukh Khan and Manisha Koirala starrer released in 1998. Though a romance, the film had strong ongoing themes of terrorism and politics. In the movie, Shahrukh plays the role of a simple Radio Jockey from Delhi who is sent to North-Eastern India to get attitudes of people there about India's upcoming 50th independence anniversary. There, he meets Meghna (played by Manisha) and falls in love with her. In the end, Meghna turns up in Delhi to attempt to assassinate the Prime Minister during the Republic Day parade in an act of terrorism. Even though Shahrukh saves the PM, the movie ends on a melancholic note showing how terrorism can touch even the most innocent of lives.

 

Sarfarosh
The 1999 film was releases amongst the midst of the Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan and focused on an Indian police officer, Ajay's (played by Aamir Khan) quest to stop cross-border terrorism. Ajay strives to do everything to curb terrorism when his elder brother is killed by terrorists and his father is severely beaten by them for agreeing to testify against the terrorists in a court of law. Once again, this movie showcases how even a minor act of terrorism has the most profound effects on numerous lives!

 

Mission Kashmir
The 2000 Vidhu Vinod Chopra release had Sanjay Dutt, Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta and Jackie Shroff in the main roles. The movie focuses on the story of Altaaf (Hrithik Roshan), a young boy whose family gets killed in the crossfire in a police raid against terrorists. One of the police officers (Sanjay Dutt) adopts him but when Altaaf grows up and realizes the truth, he seeks revenge against his adoptive father by becoming a terrorist. The movie deals with the India-Pakistan conflict and focuses especially on the children caught between the terrorism!

 

Fiza
The Karishma Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Jaya Bachchan starrer was released in 2000. The movie focuses on Fiza's (played by Kapoor) to find her brother Aman (Hrithik) who disappeared 1993 Bombay riots. When Fiza finally finds his brother, she soon learns that he has joined a terrorist organization and all his loyalties lie with them. The movie focuses on how numerous acts of terrorism rip this family apart and lead to their untimely demise.

 

Black Friday
Black Friday (2004) is based on a true story and the 1993 Mumbai bomb attacks that killed over 300. The film is shown through many perspectives of different characters and follows the investigations of those attacks. This, yet again allows the viewers to take a glimpse into the lives of each character and how the attack affects them all.

 

Dus
This multi starrer that released in 2005, is focused on a character named Altaf, a terrorist. The main leads, Sanjay Dutt, Esha Doel, Abhishek Bachchan, and Zayed Khan, all belong to India's Anti-Terrorist Cell and are determined to find Altaf which leads them to Canada and the Canadian Police Officer Danish [Suniel Shetty] who becomes an ally. The movie focuses on their journey to stop Altaf from causing some major terror.

 

A Wednesday
One of 2008's BO hits, A Wednesday was also based on terrorism starring Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill and many others. This film however, expressed the annoyance of the public towards the government and their handling of the terrorist attacks. A common man then, decides to take matters into his own hands and take care of the terrorists himself. 

New York
The 2009 Katrina-John and Neil starrer was based on the 9/11 attack in New York City. The movie showed how the attack changed the lives of the three leads as it had done for the rest of the world. Forced to become a terrorist due to becoming the victim of racism and the cruelties done by the officials, John's character Sam ends up destroying his life. Caught up in all the hatred are his wife and his best friend, who end up ruined by Sam's decisions!


Kurbaan
Next on our list is Kurbaanthe 2009 film that featured Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan. The movie was based on terrorism in general and Saif's revenge from the US that killed his family once upon a time. A sleeper cell, an undercover agent and a heart broken used wife. This once again, focuses on how terrorism impacted the lives of the leads and numerous others in a negative way.
