Item Song vs. Item Song ...

It wasn't very long ago when an 'item number' meant a raunchy dance performed by a leggy beauty, who tries to seduce/entertain the hero/villain of the film whilst the heroine remained but a perfect example of modesty.

But as the cliched saying goes, time never remains constant and yes the times have changed! Now, it's the mainframe heroines who put a step forward and dance out an overly-celebrated dance number, leaving behind their decorous-avatars and stepping into the shoes of the crude seductress to enchant their viewers worldwide.

With lead heroines getting into the sexy avatars, the 'rent-a-model-for-a-song' routine is exploited no more!

The case of yesteryears' enormous hit, "Sheila Ki Jawani" is no different. The song is a tale of a struggling actress who decides to perform an item number in a B-grade movie for some limelight and ends up executing this larger-than-the-film-itself dance. The song displayed Brit-babe Katrina Kaif, inhabiting the dancing techniques of Helen, Shakira, Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tondon among others and in the end, producing a delightful entertain which gained her an immediate appraise of fans and dance critics alike. Choreographed by Farah Khan in collaboration with Geeta Kapoor; this song stood out to be the limelight of the film, despite the film's disappointing failure at the Box Office.

Whilst the former song showcased the lead of the film in a sexy avatar, this particular song, which followed the model-for-a-song routine, stood as the throne of the most heard-performed-watched song of the year, leaving behind a hoard full of tough competitors. We. of course, are talking of "Munni Badnam Hui" which was spectacularly performed by Mallaika Arora Khan. Mallaika may not have been lured by the leading lady roles yet but still somehow manages to steal away the limelight by shaking her curves she's carved perfectly fit. It's a song, set in a crummy village and performed to entertain a crude politician, intervened by a Dabangg police officer. Although Mallaika is not at all trained with this 'gaon-ki-gori' avatar, she still stopped as many hearts and still rules their beats!

With an unimaginable item numbers containing Munni, Sheila and who not, BollyCurry has decide to take to this roller-coaster ride about the evolution into the item numbers of Bollywood. So this was just the beginning folks, dance abhi baaki hai mere dost!

Stay tuned...
