With one and a half months
still left, 2007 has been a year filled with mega hyped movies. The audience
didn’t get what they expected.” But for how long will these “big budget weak
story line” movies work. Indian audience has become choosy. Foreign locations,
extravagant sets, designer clothes do not guarantee success on the box office.
Here’s IF’s list of “super
marketed bombed on the box office” flicks.
The recent of them all is
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, launching Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. The
movie boasts of romance, songs, dances and of course super good looking Ranbir.
But the story failed to impress our Aam Janta.
Next in line was Nikhil
Advani’s Salame-E-Ishq starring big names Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra">Priyanka Chopra, John
Abraham, Vidya Balan, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and the like. But the half
cooked script and editor’s complacency to chop unimportant roles left the
audience yawning.
Not far behind is YashRaj
production’s “Tara Rum Pum” directed by Sidharth Anand. Saif Ali Khan in red
race suit and slim Rani Mukerji failed to create an impact. It didn’t do as
well as a YashRaj movie is expected to do.
Next is Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s
“Eklavya” starring Big B did not generate
much interest among the audience and
the film had nothing to be proud of except India’s Official Oscar Entry.
“Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” Doomed in
the box office. The film had couple of
good songs. Abhishek’s moustache, Big B’s Johnny Depp look and ample of unfunny
scenes just didn’t get the movie going commercially.
Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag tops
the list of “Disastrous Remake” of the year. Somebody please tell RGV that there
is one “Sholay” (august 1975), one Basanti, unmatchable friendship of Jai and
Veeru and just one Gabbar.
Pradeep Sarkar’s “Laaga
Chunri Mein Daag” was far fetched where the girl constantly believes that she
has no option but to turn to prostitution. (Give me a break!)
Last but not the least; it is
Anurag Kashyap’s “No Smoking” starring John Abraham. The film will leave you dazed
and wonder what the director was thinking (or smoking) while making this movie.
Wish the director chose a different title, “No Story Only Smoking”.
