Saif plays safe

Saif debut production film Love Aaj Kal starring him with Deepika Padukone is to be released on  July 31, but trouble brews as the Punjab Cultural and Heritage Board wants to make its displeasure against the film heard.

"We quite liked the film but the problem that the community <a href=Saif Ali Khan" align="right" hspace="5" vspace="5" />has with Saif's beard is still there. Rishi Kapoor's beard was too short as well and then in one scene Saif goes to the gurudwara to woo his girl, which could be objectionable. We will have a meeting with the other community members and decide what to do on Friday," President of the Punjab Cultural and Heritage Board Charan Singh Sapra said.

The film's director Imtiaz Ali and producer-star Saif Ali Khan organised a screening for members of the Board on Tuesday evening to reassure them that their movie is not disrespectful to the Sikh community.

Saif said, "Veer Singh, the character I play is one of the most respectable sardars ever but his beard is a bit thin because I've tried but it doesn't get thicker."

Several Bollywood films have notoriously portrayed Sikh characters as stereotypes over the years, and hence the community's concern over another possible misrepresentation may not be entirely unjustified. The filmmakers volunteered to satisfy the community's doubts by organising a screening.
Now the censor board has asked director Imtiaz Ali to remove the word "sardar" from a scene in the movie becoz it is felt people may find it offensive. Vinayak Azad, Regional Officer, Censor Board, says "In the scene, Saif Ali Khan is sitting with a foreigner who is looking very upset. Deepika Padukone who is sitting at a distance, texts him asking if he can make her smile. To do this Said suys to the girl, 'Ek Sardar tha..." but realising that the girl will not understand hindi, he instead says ,'There was a blonde'. Azad says he explained this to Imtiaz Ali who after deliberation changed the word sardar to 'aadmi'. Although Azad insists that Imtiaz changed it voluntarily, since he understood that the scene didnt mean anything offensive and the usage could create another controversy.

If these movie makers are trying to portray a community they better get their approval. Enough has been done in hindi movies to degrade Sikhs and by sardar jokes. If they want to show a sardar then they better have a proper represention otherwise don't make them a sardar. No one is begging!

i think that the sikhs have been portrayed wrong in lot of movies and it is offensive if u do it to any community thats the only reason they r being carefull, but i agree talking abt the beard its too short and stuff is bit much coz that happens a lot being a sikh i know, but all the other things like those silly jokes abt the sikhs and they always have some stupid guy in every movie who will potray as a silly sikh thats just wrong, so now they have to step in and take some action so there is nothing wrong with it....

I agree that they are pushing it a little bit, but if they want to play a sardar role then i guess you just have to deal with the rules. WE ALL KNOW IT'S A MOVIE AND THEY R STOPPING A PERFECTLY FINE MOVIE BUT JUST DEAL WITH THE FREAKIN RULES. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SARDAR AND DON'T WANT TO HAVE A BEARD AND DON'T WANT TO FOLLOW RULES, WELL THEN I GUESS SAIF WOULD HAVE LOOKED AWESOME BEING A CHRISTIAN OR ANY OTHER CAST!!! DON'T DO THE FUCK 'N MOVIE IF YOU CAN'T DEAL WITH ALL OF THE RULESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH COME ON PEOPLE WHY IS EVERYON EDOING A SARDAR ROLE! SO FED UP WITH IT. WHEN SAIF IS DANCING IN A WHITE TUX, HE IS KIND OF MAKING FUNNY FACES AND IT LOOKED AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it's just a movie! If someone doesn't like it, then they shouldn't watch it. Simple as that. Why do they have to stop other ppl from watching a perfectly fine movie. Ppl stereotype everyone, not just Sikhs. It's just a MOVIE!

I won't say anything about the beard, but in reality a lot of guys go to Gurudwaras, Mosques, Churches and Temples to woo the girl...true it's wrong...but it happens! It's a movie...just enjoy it!

LOL. apparently all movies that are objected upon first are the ones that turn out to be blockbuster hits. many examples are of last year...people just love making issues- in singh is kinng, most of the collections were made in Punjab (the Sikh community)...so I see no worries
