The 'Mom' Look

Over the years, fashions and styles have developed, changed and evolved, and this is visibly evident when we look back at the entire line of movies that Bollywood has produced over time. This month, BollyCurry is celebrating mothers, both reel and real, and so we decided to take stock of how reel mothers' fashion sense has evolved over time.

In the era of black and white, and somewhat sepia-toned films, we had the likes of Achla Sachdev, Nirupa Roy and Rakhee playing mothers to young children. Mothers in these films were identified by the white sarees draped around their bodies, the pallus on their heads and of course, the little children in their arms or by their sides. This was the traditional and conservative mother that Bollywood portrayed. But as the world around them changed, so did they.

First they dropped the dupatta from their heads, then sarees switched to salwaar kameezes, and then kurti tops with jeans! The fashion of the reel mothers changed with time as did that of the real mothers.

Jaya Bachchan in Kal Ho Naa Ho was modernly dressed in jeans and blouses, a far cry from the sarees of some of her earlier films, while Dimple Kapadia alternated between salwaar kameezes, kurti tops and blouses in Pyaar Mein Twist. And if you think about the young mothers in Ra.One or Pyaar Impossible? You've got them in short skirts and mini-dresses as well!

Mothers, for one, though from a different generation than their children, know how to keep pace with the next generation. They more frequently can be seen wearing what is comfortable for them, not what is expected of them. They can still be traditional, still be conservative, but their thoughts can be modern. Meshing the traditional and modern in a beautiful amalgam, they adapt. Mothers, after all, are one of the strongest characters in our lives - and if our mothers can change their styles as they wish, so can the mothers on screen!

What are some of the most memorable looks of the mothers on the silver screen that have stuck with you, or you favour? Do share with us!
