Bollywood's Big Budget Flops!

Comments  Comments [ 56 ]    By Nabila K. | 03 August 2010 | 5:56pm

The fortunate part of indulgent promotional campaigns for most of the recent big, even average banner movies, is that it depicts a thriving scenario in B-Town - an upward trend as far as riches go.

The unfortunate part however, deals with the magic of most such ventures limiting itself to promotions alone, and the built up anticipation from them. For lets be frank, how many high expectations since the dawn of 2010 have we been let down for, as the audience? Not a number one can ignore.

While innovation and creativity is being employed to its best during the post production publicity stage for movie projects, not half as much can be said about the story telling, characterizations or plot strengths as such. Which really, is such a pity.

Here's looking at some of the big disappointments of 2010, so far ...

Veer

Cast:  Salman Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, Zarine Khan
Directed By: Anil Sharma

It may have been Salman's dream project, but the 'epic love story of a war hero' was let down by the banal storyline and poor acting from the supporting cast.  However the melodious soundtrack was largely applauded!

Kites

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Babara Mori, Kangna Ranaut
Directed by: Anurag Basu

Due to immense promotion, Kites opened to a successful weekend with the hopes of wowing the audience.  Unfortunately the dazzling cinematography and lead chemistry failed to impress when overshadowed by the large reliance on English and Spanish dialogues; hardly the norm for a Bollywood movie.

Paatshala

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Ayesha Takia Azmi, Nana Patekar
Directed by: Milind Ukey

Despite optimistic projections from test audiences and crew, Paatshala failed to meet expectations as the well-intentions of the movie are overshadowed by a rather convoluted screenplay and loud acting coupled with bad dialogues.

Raavan

Cast: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vikram, Govinda
Directed by: Mani Ratnam

The aesthetics may have been jaw-dropping, the basic premise inspiring, and the actors top notch, but the Editor seemed to have been too snip happy, consequently then movie lacked coherence in the flow of its storyline, and overall appeared as a huge confusing mess.

Teen Patti

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, R Madhavan, Ben Kingsley, Dhruv Ganesh, Siddharth Kher, Shraddha Kapoor, Vaibhav Talwar
Directed by: Leena Yadav

It may have been based on the successful Hollywood flick 21, but Teen Patti's intricate storyline was not laid out into a plot half as distinct, not to mention it's release coinciding with monster hit MNIK. Resultantly, it was quickly overlooked in favour of more commercial releases.

Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Konkona Sen Sharma, Paresh Rawal
Directed by: Ashwin Dhir

Whilst a fresh concept with superb natural acting from the main cast, Atithi tends to drag where other movies would have picked up the scissors.  The clean comedy appeals to the family and is subtly funny but fails to be appreciated in the current climate where only slapstick comedies are given their due.

Paathshala, and Kites were amazing films, Atithi was good too... Veer and Raavan flopped i am not surprise, too bad for the producers but happy that it flopped,

i also want Aishwarya's next Guzarish to flop, but on the other hand it has hrithik and Sanjay leela bansali is directing, two of my favorites.
