The shehensha of Bollywwod, Amitabh Bachchan. He needs no introduction and is a legend in the true sense of the word. In a candid chat with India-Forums Amitabh Bachchan speaks about his relation with R. Balki, his upcoming film Shamitabh and his love for the social media.

If you had to define Shamitabh in a few words, what would you say?

Unique, it's a very different kind of a plot, which has never happened in Hindi Cinema before. As you know, Balki makes films that are very different from some of the expected stories that you see in Indian cinema. It's very challenging for actors like me who are involved in those films. Basically there are two individuals in this film, Dhanush and me; we have qualities which are individually unknown to each other. There is a journalist, played by Akshara Hassan, who discovers the talent that both these people possess and she feels that, individually, on their own, it may not be possible for them to move forward in their life, but if they would come together, it would be beneficial, which she manages to do. Then there is progress, but after a certain point of time their egos come into the way, that's where the conflict comes in. How it is resolved or not is in the story, which I can't reveal.

Was Shamitabh a gift to you from R. Balki?

Every film comes to me as a gift. Not just Balki but every producer or director. It just so happened, coincidently, that he was there for my birthday and he said, 'this is what I want to make next', so that way it was a gift, a wonderful gift.

Does your character in Shamitabh come with an element of frustration?

The character itself is very frustrated; he is a frustrated old man who is very disappointed with life, being drunk and then he suddenly discovers that there is some kind of similarity between the acumen that he has and the acumen that the other counterpart has.

What was your experience like working with Dhanush?

He is wonderful artist, very unassuming, dedicated and professional. There are great subtleties in what he does. Simple things look so wonderful when he performs; he is a very accomplished artist. I have seen some films of his, portions actually.  But I did see Raanjhana, which was an excellent performance and a film.

Abhishek Bachchan has stepped into the shoes of a Producer, what are your thoughts on that?

How many times have you heard someone speak about the producer? Very few times. People either speak about the artists or the music or the director. But the main person is the producer, because he is silently working behind the scenes. He puts everything together; he ensures everything is moving smoothly. Progress is made; timings are kept, till the release takes place. I guess Abhishek too does the same job, when he dons the producer's hat. We have seen in the past that he has been very proficient in doing that. Some of the films that he has been associated with have all seen the light of the day.

What are your views about R. Balki - the director?

I think the writing of all of Balki's films have been quite interesting. If you analyse his writing you will get to know his mind a bit. It's not just a desire to do something which is unique just because it makes a movie visually appealing, but there is a very intelligent streak, as far as the writing is concerned. It's like, how do you take a situation as a background; create a circumstance which will put the actor in a situation where that background, that feel and that emotion gives him an opportunity to express himself. And then is what I think Balki does brilliantly, is to relate, what he is going to say in words to the emotion. It is a little difficult to explain this without giving out the plot of the film (laughs). Like the whiskey scene in Shamitabh for example, as the dialogue goes, 'Scotch mein, paani woh, mixing, hai koi paani joh chadti hai whiskey ke bina. Paani needs whiskey, par whiskey ko zaroorat nahi kissi ki', he has taken a very practical situation, but expressed a feeling. He actually wants to say that I am better than that guy. Every scene has this little subtlety in his writing. I can say something plainly like, 'I am jealous of you', but instead of saying it directly, how to put it beautifully in circumstances, Balki knows very well. He has an intelligent mind when he writes something.

Do we get to see a compilation of all your writings?

It's not worth it. Everyone who visits my blog, I call them my extended family, because they are so personal. They ask me questions like, have you had food, please go to bed early, please take care of your health; these are elements that make you very close to the people. People think I have a huge social media team, who does my social media, but that is wrong I do all of it myself.

We hope and wish that the Big B continues to entertain us for many years more and also that Shamitabh proves to be yet another blockbuster hit!
