Mumbai, Dec 24 (IANS) "Immortal", "kind" and "gentle" are some words that Bollywood celebrities like Lata Mangeshkar, Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit-Nene have used to describe the late Bollywood singer Mohammed Rafi on his 93rd birth anniversary on Sunday.

Born on December 24, 1924, Rafi ventured into the Indian music industry as a playback singer in 1941 and never looked back till his sudden death in 1980 at the age of 55.

He is best known for his songs like "Yeh duniya yeh mehfil", "Chura liya hai tumne", "Tum jo mil gaye ho" and "Kya hua tera wada".

Search engine Google also dedicated its doodle to Rafi showing him recording in a studio, while actors are lip syncing onscreen.

Here's what the film fraternity said on his birth anniversary on Twitter.

Lata Mangeshkar: Today is great singer Mohammed Rafi's birthday. Rafi was a kind and gentle man. I pay homage to his memories.

Jackie Shroff: 'Mujhe dard e dil ka pata na tha mujhe aap kisliye mil gaye'. Always in our heart. Happy birthday Mohammed Rafi.

Madhuri Dixit-Nene: 'Palkon ke peeche se'. One of my favourite songs of Rafi. Remembering him today on his birth anniversary.

Vishal Dadlani: Rafi, the immortal.

Armaan Malik: Here's a small tribute to one of my favourite singers -- the legendary Mohammed Rafi. Today is his 93rd birth anniversary. Sir, you continue to live on in our hearts and souls.
