Luxury wedding gets new definition with 'Mandapam'

New Delhi, July 29 (IANS) 'Mandapam', a colossal 16 ft diameter and 18 ft high installation with 44,000 Swarovski crystals with brass laser cut panels and blown glass here, is an attempt to showcase a new development in bespoke weddings with the creative integration of design, innovation and heritage.

'Mandapam', a unique concept designed by klove Studio in collaboration with Swarovski, was unveiled on the opening day of 'Treasury of Trousseau' at DLF Emporio.

Swarovski, a premium brand for fine crystals, has collaborated with the enterprising designer duo Gautam Seth and Prateek Jain of klove Studio to create the 'Mandapam'.

"The idea to come up with this concept is to add decor elements and bespoke luxury to the wedding. It has to be a fusion of art and design and this is what is seen through this mandap," Vivek Ramabhadran, managing director - Swarovski Professional, told IANS.

Asked about the takers of such concepts in India, he added: "There are different takers for everything. Wedding market is changing and there are times when people look for something phenomenal and unique. People are still very much rooted in tradition and hence, this will sell too. Another unqiue part fo this 'Mandap' is that it can travel to different cities as it is modular."

Giving it a contemporary yet traditional appeal and straddling the world of high design with traditional architecture, klove has artistically incorporated Swarovski crystal pendeloques, beads, octagons, pear drops, flat backs and strands in a variety of traditional colours, including bordeaux and blue violet.

Once dismantled, the 'Mandapam' can be transformed into six different lighting installations, making it versatile to use for different occasions.

Excited about this creative installation, Seth said: "The 'Mandapam' installation is a landmark project for us. We have for the second time collaborated with Swarovski. This work is the largest piece we have ever done and it's a new arena of sorts that we are exploring. A lot of thought, hard work and love has gone into making the 'Mandapam'."

The Treasury of Trousseau, a four-day event with participation by designers like Suneet Varma, Niharika Khan, Aki Narula and Mohan Neelakantan, is aiming to be a platform to help prospective brides and grooms to get the perfect look for their wedding.

"This is my second time here with them and I have come on board as stylist. I am looking forward to all my appointments. The last time was very busy, but very fruitful in terms of business," Narula told IANS.

The third edition of the event started here on Tuesday.
