Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador for polio eradication, is proud that the country has rid itself of the virus. His next focus is emancipation of the girl child.

He hopes to achieve similar results as he helped for polio.

"As UN ambassador for Girl Child, I hope and pray we accomplish same results as polio...rid nation of discrimination against women," Amitabh posted on the microblogging site Twitter Monday night.

The 71-year-old feels a sense of pride in the progress that the country has been making in ridding itself of polio.

"Finally! India has been removed from endemic list. By end of 2014, we shall be polio free country. A sense of pride," he tweeted.

The actor also congratulated himself on this victory.

"As UN ambassador for polio, I feel congratulated on the eradication of the disease. I worked really very hard on it for years," added the thespian, who has been associated with the cause for a decade now and has been urging parents all over India to take their children to the polio booths for the anti-virus drops.

He also featured in TV campaigns for the cause.
