Indian films shine among world cinema at MFF closing ceremony

Indian films such as "Katiyabaaz" and "Fandry" won top honours at the 15th Mumbai Film Festival which concluded Thursday night in style with active participation from Bollywood celebrities such as Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma.

The festival, organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), included over 200 feature films, including a mixture of documentaries and short films. The films were screened across twelve categories.

The four competition sections of the fest include The Harmony Celebrate Age, Dimensions Mumbai, India Gold 2013 and International Competition.

The Harmony Celebrate Age Jury, headed by Indian filmmaker Hansal Mehta bestowed the best film award on Chilean-Spanish drama "Gloria" directed by Sebastian Lelio, while the second best film ward was awarded to director Matevz Luzar for Slovenian film "Good to Go".

Palestinian films "Oh, How I Long" by Riyad Deis and "Arefi, The Shepherd" won the special mention awards from the jury in the same category.

Dimensions Mumbai, a short film competition for Mumbaikars under the age of 25, received some of the best films that showcased the spirit of Mumbai. 20 short films were selected and screened in this section, which was headed by Indian filmmaker Shoojit Sircar.

The best film in this category was awarded to "In this City" by S. Keyur Kajavadra, while another short film titled "Mumbaicha Vada Pav" by Akshay Dhanavale won the second best film award.

Two special mention awards from the jury went to Sameer Nekar's "The Handicapped Colony" and Abhiraj Rajadyaksha's "Share".

The India Gold 2013 section, headed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi announced Deepti Kakkar and Fahad Mustafa's "Katiyabaaz" as the best film and director Anup Singh's "Qissa: A Tale of a Lonely Ghost" as second best film.

A special jury award was handed over to Manju Borah's "A Silent Way" in the same category.

Mexican drama "The Golden Cage" by Diego Quemada-Diez was awarded the best film in the International Competition section headed by Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford. Indian film "Fandry" by Nagraj Manjule won the grand jury prize.

Director Anthony Chen won the best director award for his Singaporean family-drama "Ilo Ilo", while Yann Yann Yeo won the best actress award for the same film.

The best actor in the International Competition section was awarded to Vincent Macaigne for his role in French drama "Tonnerre".

The ceremony was followed by American thriller film "The Fifth Estate", about the story of WikiLeaks starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Bruhl.
