Second jail term will destroy Sanjay Dutt: Pritish Nandy

Mumbai, March 21 (IANS) Filmmaker Pritish Nandy is extremely "sad" for his "friend" Sanjay Dutt, who has been sentenced to five years in prison in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. He believes the second jail term can be detrimental for the actor.

"Sad for Sanjay Dutt. He is paying for what was an act of folly. He is no traitor. He made a mistake. He is paying for it. Hugely. I will be very sad to see Sanjay Dutt go back to jail... where I used to meet him years ago. A second term will destroy the man," tweeted Nandy.

The Supreme Court Thursday upheld the death sentence of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and commuted the death sentence of 10 others in relation with the blasts, in which a series of 13 car bomb blasts ripped across Mumbai.

The apex court also upheld Sanjay's conviction under the Arms Act in the terror attack for illegal possession of a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle.

Nandy is all for the ruling, which has come 20 years after the attack, but is upset for his friend, with whom he collaborated on movies like "Shabd" and "Kaante".

"The strange dichotomies of life. A fine Supreme Court judgment on the Bombay blasts. But yes, Sanjay Dutt is my friend. I am sad for him. And I can't even meet Sanjay. I am in Kolkata," he added.
