Nagpur, Sep 27 (IANS) Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a farmers' advocacy group in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, has objected to the selection of Aamir Khan's 'Peepli Live' as India's official entry for the Oscars calling it as a 'black comedy'.

'Vidarbha is the epicentre of Indian agrarian crisis where around 200,000 farmers committed suicide in the last decade. The basic theme and script of the film is a satire on this serious issue. It would be absolutely wrong to say that farmers are committing suicide for compensation,' said Kishor Tiwari, president of VJAS Monday.

Vidarbha farmers and widows had Aug 15 protested the storyline of the film.

'We have written to union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni to cancel the nomination of 'Peepli Live' for the Oscars,' Tiwari said.

    why do the official (whoever's) in india always put indian films which showcase poverty, slums, pain in india, dirt in india etc. for oscars?
    i would love to see a normal indian movie made, acted in etc. that did extrememly well worldwide to be entered one day

    its like everyone loves to see slums & poverty in india and call it "art" while other films are not seen worthy enough to be entered o_O

    Shameful...

    @Shaina_b
    true. very true.
    its pathetic. Slumdog millionaire proved it to be the same.
    i think the world is very narrow minded- they like what they want to see. Story's like Iqbal, or Guru (all rags to riches) or even wake up sid (which i feel every boy no matter he is hungarian or american or australian or a bloody eskimo- they all go through it- the journey of becoming mature) Inspirational Indian movies are booed and only poverty, slums and backwardness is what they like.

    i feel that bollywood find its an honor that, whatever their film, its been chosen for the "oscars"- which is pathetic.

    Im not against Peepli Live- the film- it shows reality- and im not denying the reality. But i believe making a hype n publicity, and trying to trap as much money u can from it and keep saying "so sad" "so bad"and being sympathic is of poor caliber. But what about the farmer's who are living the life- potrayed in the film.

    Trying to cancel the nomination becuase farmer's are dying for compensation. I say- quit the oscars- leave some dignity for India, our politicians have seen to have proved on an international level- we are corrupted, at least bollywood- Respect your Country, before Respecting another country's film award.2010-09-28 09:48:02
