'Kurbaan' puts spotlight on global terrorism (Preview)

After delivering two back to back hits in the form of light-hearted comedies 'Dostana' and 'Wake Up Sid', producer Karan Johar is set to showcase global terrorism in his forthcoming film 'Kurbaan', which is releasing Friday.

Distributed by UTV Motion Pictures, the thriller is the directorial debut of Rensil D'Silva and stars Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi in lead roles. Om Puri, Kirron Kher and Dia Mirza also feature in it.

'Kurbaan' has a deep-rooted love story to it, but it is not a frothy romantic film that we are time and again exposed to. The love story is much deeper here. There is a definite meaning, purpose and reason to it. Also, the film is quite powerful in its own way since it's the voice of moderate Islam,' Kareena had told IANS.

Shot in Philadelphia and Brooklyn, it is about Avantika Ahuja (Kareena) who lives in the US and returns to Delhi after her father has a cardiac arrest. While in Delhi, she meets Ehsaan Khan (Saif), a professor whom she marries and returns to the US with.

But soon Avantika realises that she is a pawn in Ehsaan's game as he turns out to be a terrorist who marries her in order to cover his identity. Avantika is kept under house arrest where she also finds out that Ehsaan plans to hijack a flight. One of the passengers on that flight is Riyaaz (Vivek), a journalist.

Shooting for the movie didn't come easy for the actors courtesy sub-zero temperatures in the US.

'Kurbaan' was hard work. In fact, the Philadelphia schedule was plain hell. It gets dark there at 4 p.m. Moreover, it's so cold and at minus 10 degrees it can actually get really depressing. Since we were shooting in sync sound, it was extremely difficult to get the pitch and tone right while delivering our dialogues,' said Saif.

The actors had to wear layers of clothing to protect themselves from the Philadelphia cold but for continuity's sake, they also had to wear the same clothes in the summer of Mumbai, after the US shoot was over.

'Kurbaan' has generated considerable buzz but it had its share of controversies too thanks to the secrecy about its title while it was being filmed and then Kareena's backless shot being used for the publicity posters of the movie.

This isnt fair, like always have a go at muslims. This movie is a potential problem causer, I dnt even think they know the conciqueneces of their actions.... the media will just hype the whole Muslim and terror thing, do they even try and understand what people feel that follow the religion... its disgusting n selfish!

Voice of moderate islam??? Do you even know the meaning of islam?? As for Saif Ali Khan, you can call yourself muslim, but that doesn't mean you are one. Not enough ppl hate us, that you want to spread more hate and cause more discrimination than there already is?? Seriously, they don't care about how we feel, they don't care about Islam, muslims or anybody else for that matter. All they care about is cashing their money. Why is it that every time a minority of so called muslims do something wrong they are automatically associated with their religion and called radicals? How come whenever a non-muslim does anything wrong his/her religion isn't even mentioned? Why can't people understand that the problem isn't Islam it's people that call themselves muslim, but don't follow the teachings of Islam? And for the cover of this movie, if their in some way trying to associate it with Islam wow really lol ppl. The core of Islam is modesty!!!!!!!!! As for those that take their information of Islam from the media you shouldn't be talking. If you really want to learn what Islam is and what we believe in, ask a muslim who actually practices the religion. Because no matter what the media says, its prejudiced. People aren't born prejudiced, prejudice is learned. The media won't come out and say that All muslims are terrorists but they'll do everything so that you come up with that opinion!

of couuuursseee!!!if they had to do a movie about islam of course its about terrorism and hijacking....thnks bollywood! imagine how muslims feel when we see a movie about people discriminating us. and idk the whole story line but a pic can speak a thousand words......look at the poster!! it looks like a frikkin po*no movie....i seriously luv saif and hes naam se muslim i hope it doesnt protray us wrongly

The poster is just too inappropriate!! I don't understand how the mothers and fathers and relatives of these movie stars actually tolerate these things. I mean who would be comfortable in seeing his/her sister/mother/cousin in that type of a pose with a guy?

ok, i applaud anyone who does a film about terrosim -HOWEVER mr karan johar should stick to doing to typical masala indian films. Films about terrosism should not be glamourised like this film is, whats with the songs and the dodgy posters, both actors have no shame, they live their lives as they wish, they both are not very good actors and all this about it being sub zero temparature and getting dark, REAL GOOD QUALITY actors do not claim. If karan was serious about this film, he should not have had these 2 actors, but DECENT actors, not a big music producer like Pritam but someone else, this film seems to about big acotrs, big producers, big locations but the storylines seems typical.
Also i dont care if it is HINDUS - SIKHS OR CHRISTIAN who make movies about islam, I want them to do justice and examine about terrosism and islam. KARAN JOHAR - HOPE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE
