SRK's detention raises questions about US procedures: Tharoor

Aligarh, Aug 19 (IANS) Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor Wednesday said Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan's detention at a US airport 'raised real questions about US procedures'.

This also happens to hundreds of innocent Muslims daily who do not have a billion people to stand up for them, Tharoor told reporters when asked about Khan's detention at Newark international airport in US Saturday.

Tharoor was interacting with the media here after delivering a lecture on India's foreign policy at Aligarh Muslim University.

The incident involving Khan sparked massive public outrage in India. The actor himself has called it an 'embarrassing' episode.

Tharoor is not the first minister to speak out against Khan's questioning at the Newark airport in New Jersey Aug 15. Home Minister P. Chidambaram Monday had said the Americans had 'overdone it' by detaining Khan for two hours for questioning.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel also said the government would take up the issue with the US government at its highest level.

No offense but if any of you have ever been detained anywhere in the US because someone THOUGHT you were a threat you would understand. Most Americans don't even know the difference between an Indian, Pakistani or Afghani person. All they see is your skin and hair, and lookout, you're going to blow up something. And think about this: If Brad Pitt came to Indian and was detained for 10 minutes at an airport for ANY reason, it would be all over the news here. And after that Indians here would be treated differently just because it happened in India. After 9/11 my Indian neighbor's store was vandalized and abuses were hurled at him. None of the suspected terrorists were Indian. But people still treated him badly, because he fit the profile. SRK too fit the profile. Prejudice happens every day, and no matter who it happens to its disgusting. The only difference this time is because SRK is famous, you found out about it. When things happen to famous people, everyone hears about it. But he was the victim here.

why we can not say anything...as if you understand him so much..it is not cheap publicity.....srk i s a actor. he can make a good story....he has his indian politician support just because he is an actor..nothing else...the same thng if ordinary muslim of india would say it won't be big issue and no one will support.
India has law Do not punish famous people because they have everything. they never punish sanjay dutt and salman khan for their illegal work. there punishment was just like jail for few years..lol...

on indian street he is famous not on world street..srk should live in his shoes.

I really do not understand one thng that why it is being a big issue??? everyone is saying he is being check up just because of he is khan and muslim...srk is not first muslim who check by security..I mean they check almost everyone..even if i just cross canada amarica border they check everything.

SRK IS NOT FIRST INDIAN WHO CHECK BY SECURITY. SO MANY PPL FACE THIS THEY NEVER CREATE ISSUE. IF THAT ORDINARY PERSON FACED IT THE WAY SRK FACED..I DO NOT THINK IT WOULD EVEN COME IN NEWS & NONE OF THEN SUPPORT HIM/HER, EVEN THOUGH HE/SHE WOULD TELL ANYONE. I NEVER SEEN SALMAN AND SAIF ALI KHAN CREATE SUCH ISSUE. IT HAPPENS TO ME JUST BECAUSE I AM KHAN...SO CHIDISH..HE IS NOT ONE KHAN IN THE WORLD.

HE IS GETTING PUBLICITY AND SYMPATHY IN HIS OWN COUNTRY.

what we can aspect from india.....they never see their own country security and talking abt. US security....at least our security does not take money from passengers....indian security takes out money....fame works there...if you have so much prob. with USA than do not come here......
