Over time, several Bollywood celebrities have agreed to the fact that Bollywood has always been a male-dominated industry, that being said several filmmakers, actors, and technicians have often raised an objection to an actor being paid more than his female counterpart. Discussing the same, Zoya Akhtar talked extensively about the unknown facts in B-town. The filmmaker recently made an appearance on Kareena Kapoor Khan's chat show What Women Want and opened up about the existing pay parity in the film industry.

The filmmaker was asked if she's ever been paid lesser than a male director. To which, Zoya explained that while she's never faced it and has gotten paid for what she's asked, she later found out that the male directors, within her bracket, had asked for more and hence, were paid more. Adding that it's her problem, Zoya on to share that all this made her wonder as to why didn't she ask for enough and why didn't she think she deserved more.

Kareena then asked her if as a producer, she's ever witnessed an actor asking for more than his female counterpart, Zoya explained that the "actors always ask for more than the women."

She added, "Because it really depends on star power. You're a star if you open a film. You open a film, I mean it's... bumps on sales. So, if I am guaranteeing you, no matter what the quality of your movie is, just because I'm the face on your poster, I'm guaranteeing you a 25 crore opening, then I deserve a share of that."

On being asked if a Ranveer Singh would get paid more than an Alia Bhatt, Zoya said she'd always want it to be equal but added that the producers will have their reasons. "You're talking to the wrong person because I would want it to be equal. But having said that, a producer will turn around and tell me if a Ranveer Singh, with no known actress opens at 15 crores or 20 crores, and an Alia Bhatt film with a no known actor opens at that much.. we'll pay her."

Zoya went on to explain that the producers and the film industry are part of the whole society and not "some magic kingdom floating in space" which continues to grapple with sexism and patriarchy on daily basis. She stated that once the audience begins to pay to see the women on screen, things will begin to change. She said, "I think that once the audience realises that they want to pay to see women, they want to start opening their films. Go there, buy that ticket put it out there. You want things to be equal. Do something about it. You can't just sit there and say men get paid more than women. Men are getting paid more than women because you're paying to see the men. Pay to see the women now."
