Vishal Bharadwaj's 'Rangoon' is the story set in the pre-independence period (World War II) . It's a tale of war against the ruthless British empire and showcases events of conflicts between Azad Hind Fauz (led by Subhash Chandra Bose) and the English men. The film also has a 'Love Story' element added it to it, that makes it more interesting to watch.
Talking about the characters-
Kangana Ranaut: Undoubtedly, she is the heart of the film. Her character is named as 'Julia'. She is shown as an actress who works in a theater and entertains the masses. She portrays the role of a 'happy go lucky' kind of woman who has a child-like attitude in her personality. She stands as the center of attraction all throughout the film. As usual, her power packed performance makes the film much more interesting.
Shahid Kapoor: He plays the character of Jamadar Nawab Malik. A determined and one of the bravest officer of the Indian Army (led by British) who is secretly on a mission with Azad Hind Fauz, and works against the British Government to achieve freedom for the country. As the story proceeds, his character falls in love with Kangana. Shahid's performance in the film is commendable. He perfectly fits into his role and does a good justification to it.
Saif Ali Khan: Saif's plays the role of Rustom' aka 'Rusi' Billimoria. A top level army officer who is also a film entrepreneur. His character is madly in love with 'Juli' and he treats her like his princess. He lovingly calls her as 'Kiddo'. He is shown as a disciplined and business minded person. Saif has delivered a fair performance in the film.
Talking about romance, Shahid and Kangana's lip lock scene doesn't seem to live up to the hype that it had created. Shahid and Saif who are brilliant officers but share the same love interest-Julia, and they would go to any extent to safeguard their love.
All in all, the actors have delivered a good performance. It's an intriguing story and keeps the audience connected. However, in terms of film's script and story, it could have been much better. The film has many hard hitting dialogues and is shot at an extensive locations which makes it more entertaining. Overall, it's a good one-time watch film!
Considering the cinematography, performances, music we would rate the film with : *** (3 out of five stars).
