Strong punch of entertainment : Dishoom movie review (3/5)

We have had quite a few investigative cop stories in Bollywood. Rohit Dhawan's Dishoom is one such story but stands out differently because of the kind of treatment it has been given. Dishoom revolves around a police officer, Kabir(John Abraham) who is sent to the Middle East to lookout for a missing Indian cricketer. Where he is accompanied by a junior level officer, Junaid (Varun Dhawan), who is pretty much the clown of the department. These two come together to fight the bad guy, Vagha (Akshay Khanna), who is a bookie, he abducts Viraj Sharma (Saquib Saleem); who is the top performer of the Indian cricket team and threatens him to loose the an important Indo-Pak match.

Performances

The overall cast of the film has done enough justice to their respective roles. John doesn't lose his stern and tough character anywhere throughout the movie. Though there are few moments where he smiles and those dimples take your heart away. But minus those few times Varun steals your heart for the sheer sweetness and innocence he resonates on screen. He is the reason for the lighter moments in the film. Jacqueline neither adds nor takes away much to the film. But she is the only source of a little unwanted romance.

But one person stands out in the film, Akshay Khanna. This is not the 1st time that he is playing a baddie, but he does it with a lot of panache. Though he doesn't enjoy a lot of screen time but he has your attention for every second that he does.

The surprise package is Akshay Kumar, who has a cameo of hardly a minute or two. He plays a gay in the film! Yes you read it right. He does the gay act so well, now that's one versatile actor must say. He brings in a lot of laughter to the film and it's great to watch him in something so different. You definitely can't ignore him.

High points

The story line is definitely one of the high points. Rohit Dhawan does a good job doning the director's hat. He has used every actor to the best of their potential. The casting has been done perfectly. Highest point being the antogonist. Akshay Khanna should do more of negative roles. The best part is that, the film is not infused with unnecessary songs. By the end of the movie the song, Sau tarah ke will be stuck to you. It is a foot tapping number and will be a part of every party scene. The movie is timed to a crisp two and half hours and doesn't stretch or drag at any point; well paced as well.

Low points

Jacqueline Fernandes from the top of my mind. Not many loop holes other than a few clichs which is passable. Janemann aah, the song that features Parineeti Chopra stands out like a sore thumb and spoils the taste of the film. Thankfully it comes during the end credits when the audience begins to move out of the cinema hall.

Overall

All in all, the movie is a good entertainer and a nice option for the weekend. With no other major releases opposite this action flick it will sure make some good numbers at the box - office. Put this one up on your to-do list this weekend.
