Movie Review: Ugly Aur Pagli A Time Pass

Kabir (Ranbir Shorey) is seen as a carefree loser who had been dressed as a female till the age of 5 because his parents always wanted a girl. Once Kabir realizes that he is a guy, he tries all he can to get a woman in his life but something always goes awry. An engeering student, he has failed to pass one exam in the last four years and hopes that his teachers will get bored of seeing him and let him pass. Kabir becomes the adorable Ugly of the film.

Ugly Aur PagliOne night when after a late party, Kabir is going to his aunt's place and on his way; he saves a completely sloshed girl, Kuhu (Mallika Shrewat), from falling in front of a Mumbai train. Kuhu, a unusual, strange and completely crazy girl has recently lost her boyfriend, so she gets "Talli" every now and then and makes Kabir's life hell.

The entire story has been narrated by Ugly on how his life goes upside down on meeting Pagli. Kuhu always finds new-new ways to torture him; she makes him dance on her finger, steal roses, ride a seat less cycle in "petticoat", wear high heel girls shoes, carry her bags and keeps slapping him without any reason. Kabir desperately tries to escape from the clutches of Pagli but in the process falls deeply in love with her.

Ugly Aur Pagli, from the makers of Pyaar Ke Side Effects, is just a one time watch movie, trying to be comedy in the 1st half and goes on a bit emotional track in its 2nd half. We see the couple going to Goa to celebrate their 100 day anniversary where all of a sudden Kuhu realizes that she is still not over her ex-boyfriend. A two year leap like soap operas and then she realizes she loves Kabir. One is left thinking that is love a game? For Kuhu men are like puppets and she keeps bouncing back and forth and thus the film loses its practicality and becomes stretched in the second half.

There are funny moments – thankfully to the talented Mr Shorey – and a few interesting dialogues. Sherawat isn't bad at all. The '99 slaps', which the producers have already warned the audience about, get quite boring by the time the count reaches 9. It's just not funny after a point. A number of unnecessary little incidents in the story could easily have been avoided.

Ugly Aur Pagli is a film that could have been much better but for now it fares as an average film that may bring audiences into the theatres just due to Mallika's oomph factor.

Bolly Curry Rating: 2 and half chilies, Partly funny, partly lacking sense the film is an average time pass movie.
