Roy - Movie Review

Some filmmakers play it safe, while some try to put everything they ever learnt about film making into their very first film. That is exactly what happened with Vikramjit Singh and his debut film Roy. What was proposed to be a story of thief is not just the story of a thief; it is something about the robbery, a little something about his love story and a little to do with a filmmaker, his film and his love story. Well I don't think anyone on this film has an idea about the same.  Sajid Khan once said, "If an actor doesn't believe in a film, he/she won't promote it", well was that the reason we have missed Ranbir during the promotions of Roy? Well you won't quite blame him if that is the reason (pun intended).

To talk about the plot of the movie Roy, Arjun Rampal (Kabir Grewal) plays the role of a successful film-maker while, Ranbir Kapoor (Roy) is seen as a smart mysterious thief and gorgeous Jacqueline Fernandes interestingly has double roles in the film. While, Ranbir Kapoor earns money by robbery and he remains untraceable by the police, Arjun Rampal makes a lot of money by making films on the life of Roy, all of which become super-hits at the Box Office. Jacqueline Fernandes (Ayesha) also appears as a film-maker and gets mingled with Arjun Rampal who carries an image of a play-boy. While, the initial part of the movie Roy is mostly about Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandes's romance, the film becomes welcomes a love triangle, with several mysteries associated with Jacqueline Fernandes and Ranbir Kapoor getting unfolded.

Roy mostly is film all about Arjun Rampal and he conveniently steels the show. He essays the character of Kabir Garewal, who is a successful filmmaker and on the verge of making the third part of his super hit franchise. His character is bored, lacks inspiration, and is very stubborn and rude. Must say Arjun Rampal does carry off this character with much ease and does a convincing job in most parts of the film. There are portions where he is unable to portray his feelings and emotions completely. His chemistry with Jacqueline is good till the time the songs are going on, but that train also tends to derail after a point. One may not be in love with Arjun's character in the film, but he definitely is a treat to look at, at least for his female audience.

Jacqueline Fernandes plays double roles in the film, one of Ayesha who is a filmmaker and Tia, who is an owner of a huge estate in Malaysia. Surprisingly she has managed to carry off both the roles quite well, though she looks much more comfortable in Ayesha's character. Probably that is the reason why her chemistry with Arjun looks more promising than that with Ranbir. One good thing that Vikramjit does in the film is that he has retained her Anglicized accent throughout the film, which makes her more acceptable by the audience.

Ranbir Kapoor plays the title character of the film, Roy. Sadly, because the movie doesn't completely revolve around him, his character also seems half baked. His motive behind the robberies he does looks very plain and cliche. Somehow he doesn't look comfortable playing a thief in the film, which shows up in his feeble chemistry not only with Jacqueline but also with the plot of the film.

Overall the film lacks a crispy storyline and has as many loop holes as lull moments in the film. If Roy was a fictitious character, the entire plot of the film, would have been more gripping. Which to a certain extent seems to be the plot but later seems against it, thus making it a very confusing experience for the viewers, the cinematography of the film is beautiful, thanks to the gorgeous locales of Malaysia. The music saves the film. The tracks have been among the chartbusters and are picturized equally well. All in all Roy seems to be a hurried thought, eventually serving a half-baked dish. Well this Valentine's Day, spend some quality time with your loved ones or gear up for the World Cup. Roy can be put as the last point of your priority list.
