Movie Review: Grand Masti

STATUTORY WARNING: If adult comedies offend you, then please do not go for this one because this one is a totally crazy dangerous ride. 

Grand Masti is the grander version of the 2004 hit film Masti according to the makers. While Masti was the first of its kind, films like Kya Kool Hain Hum and Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum followed the path. Bearing the torch of this particular genre Riteish Deshmukh has always passed with flying colours. Apparently Riteish has been a part of all the adult comedies that have been made in Bollywood. Lets bow down to Mr. Stalwart. 

While Masti pushed the envelope in 2004, this one has torn the envelope. These were the words of wisdom by Vivek Oberoi when I asked him about his experience of working on the film and trust me, he is absolutely correct. I agree with each word in the sentence.  

The film starts with Riteish, Vivek and Aftab reprising their characters as Amar, Meet and Prem who were the studs of their college in their time. Being the very generous seniors and passing the baton to their juniors, these cheesy boys are teaching the real meaning of A, B and C to their juniors and with visuals this time; zoom in girls wearing tight hot pants and low cut tops. 

Well, these boys grow up, get married and are not at all satisfied and happy with their wives as they have no time for these poor husbands which gives them a reason to go back to their college and have MASTI once again! 

Riteish Deshmukh plays Amar who has just had a son and all his wife, Sonalee Kulkarni cares about is the baby and not the baby's daddy. Vivek Oberoi is Meet and the poor soul has no say in his marriage. His wife played by Karishma Tanna is his boss at work and only cares about her work. Aftab Shivdasani is Prem and his wife played by Manjari Fadnis is more of a daughter in law than a wife. All she does is takes care of the house. Aw! Poor boys. (NOT) 

The boys are called to their college for a reunion which is very conveniently abbreviated as SLUTS ( Shree Lalchand University Of Technology and Science) and enter the other 3 girls in the plot. Mariyam Zakharia as Rose, Bruna Abdallah as Mary and Kainaat Arora as Marlow, together pronounced as Rose Mary Marlow, ofcourse! 

Most of the jokes in the film are just deadly. You would laugh and say ,' Oh God, this cant be happening' alot of times. Lines have been pushed and crossed in this one and to everyone's surprise every joke comes with a visual. So if you thought that you would only hear the jokes, you're mistaken. You would see what they mean as well. Oh, yes it might embarrass you at many times.

While we accept that the makers have gone way too far with this mad film, it has its moments. It will make you laugh and you'll have many moments of disbelief thinking that this cannot be happening. 

Honestly, for me only the boys in the film were worth watching. All the 3 boys are good, cheesy, funny. The film is over the top, gone too far obviously but they have atleast managed to catch the hang of the humour. Out of the girls, I could only bear Bruna and Karishma. While Manjari was saying all her lines with her eyes popping out all the time, Mariyam had a very weird accent, Kainaat was Umm... noticeable obviously in the film but not exactly for her performance and Sonalee was just bland, Karishma and Bruna were tolerable to watch. 

The first half of the film is better than the second half of the film. While the first part makes you laugh and you even want to hide during some scenes, the second half is a bit of a drag. The second part does have some abrupt moments where you're just like, Why? Most of the scenes in the second half are dependant on the pet of this villainous dean of the college, Robert Pereira played by Pradeep Rawat which is a crow. Yes, this sounds random. 

Suresh Menon is also there in the film who is a victim to the atrocities of this villainous dean and has lost his mental balance, ( to know why, you'll have to see the film). He is utter randomness. I did not like him much in the film. He is over the top but not in a comical manner. 

The director of the film, Indra Kumar has alot of guts to attempt such a subject which is almost a taboo in our country. The film is written by Tushar Hiranandani and Milap Zaveri who were a team in Masti as well with alot of other films to their credit. The music in the film is given by Anand Raj Anand and it could have been much better. 

All in all Grand Masti is worth a watch only if you can bear the burden of naughty crossing all boundaries. It will make you laugh, it will make you feel cheap at times, it would make you want to hide yourself behind the theatre seats as well. Go watch it but please NOT with your family.
