Movie Review: Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara

Pehle main khiladi tha, ab main poora khel hoon. Akshay Kumar plays the gangster, Shoaib Khan who has come to conquer Mumbai once again. He is a womanizer, the world bows down to him and he brings back the essence of the villains of old times who actually spoke 'dialogues'.

The entire description of Shoaib's character is in this one dialogue which he very proudly says, "Peene ki capacity, jeene ki strength, account ka balance aur naam ka khauf kabhi kam nahi hona chahiye".

As much as I loved Emraan Hashmi as Shoaib in the previous instalment, I could not relate to this Shoaib played by Akshay Kumar in this one. There was a disconnect. This Shoaib did not scare me. We all know Akshay Kumar is unbeatable when it comes to action and comedy, but being an antagonist is not his cup of tea. One major disappointment about Kumar here is his look. Rather than looking suave in the suits he's wearing, the big collar 80's look is not suiting him at all and in many parts makes him look comical.

Inspite of all these short comings, it's a delight to watch Khiladi Kumar jump buildings again and shoot the goons. Well, you do feel he's back and you missed him.

Imran Khan (Aslam) who plays Shoaib's protege in this part is the weakest link in the entire plot. The effort being put by the youngest Khan is evident but somehow that does not convert into anything that we are looking for. Imran looks good but then that's about it. Aslam loves
Shoaib more than his life and his ready to do anything for him but when Jasmine (Sonakshi Sinha), an upcoming starlet enters his life, his world changes. He falls in love and well that's the beginning of the war between the master and the protege. Its personal this time.

Well, for me Sonakshi has done a wonderful job after Lootera in OUATIMD. She's looks a damsel and acts well. While Sonakshi is the heroine of the film, Rajat Arora is the star of the show. The dialogues are the backbone of film. They have been written perfectly to suit every situation in the film.  Bow down to you…

The music of the film is good. The song Chugliyaan is a treat to the ears. The background score of the film is one of the reasons for the excitement to build up before every scene though. But there are parts in the film where I really wish Akshay Kumar would ace it. But unfortunately that did not happen. I was so looking forward to it.

Anyway, the film's duration is decent and it ends without a drag. But more about Shoaib's gangster activities could have been shown to make the plot even more interesting. More or less Shoaib seems like just another womanizer and not a guy I would be terrified of.

The second half of the film is way better than the first half because yes, you do get to see some action, some chasing in it.

Milan Luthria raised the bar too high for himself with Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai which the second instalment of the film is unable to achieve. It leaves you dry. The end is neither heroic nor villainous. Do not go with a lot of expectations for this one. You will be left disappointed.
