Movie Review- Ramaiya Vastavaiya

Lets go back to the time when love stories were made of a formula consisting of a rich spoiled boy, a village girl, protective farmer brother and the rest as we know is history.
Ramaiya Vastavaiya is  a remake of  the Telugu film, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana directed by Prabhu Deva which was a remake of the Salman Khan- Bhagyashree starrer, Maine Pyaar Kiya. It is a love story of the 90's in more ways than one. The rich spoiled boy Ram (Girish Kumar) who lives in Australia with his parents ( Randhir Kapoor & Poonam Dhillon) is somewhat a player. Girish is loud and dramatic where not needed especially in the first half of the film. The introductory scene of him where he enters the frame on a surf board is honestly not needed at all. Shruti ( Sona) on the other hand is impressive. She looks like a flawless beauty in a salwaar kameez and her child like smile is one of the reasons, at least for me to watch the entire film.

Sonu Sood (Raghu) is a farmer who owns a poultry farm and is an overtly protective brother. The wounds of the past have made him possessive about many things but mostly his sister. His sister is the world for him and vice-verse. Love calls in the middle of this almost perfect brother-sister duo and we all know the rest. That happens what every time happens. Girl falls in love with the boy she never thought she would, brother drags her away...boy comes to prove his love and so begins this tale of love.

The setting in the first half of the film is of the wedding house where Sona's (Shruti Haasan) best friend is supposed to get married with slapstick humor especially when it comes to Paresh Ganatra who is called Bijlee in the film. Some very old jokes are repeated left right and centre and honestly one cannot laugh on them. Satish Shah who is Ram's ( Girish Kumar) maternal uncle is a fresh change. Seeing him on the screen after such a long time did feel nice.

Shruti Hasaan as the proud village girl has done a pretty fair job in this film. Her innocence catches the camera and that makes her look beautiful. Even though the chemistry between Girish and Shruti is not great, but atleast the effort being put from Shruti's side is visible.
The second half of the film is pretty much predictable. Ram, the rich boy who has never even picked a glass of water for himself leaves his luxurious house to prove his love for Sona to her obsessive compulsive brother, Raghu. The test of love in this film is quite hard. One does feel bad for Ram when he has to pick up cow dungs, eat rice and red chilli for dinner and do everything which he has not done in his entire life. Girish is better in the latter part of the film as his irritating loud comedy has been reduced. Thank god for little mercies.

The song Jeene Laga Hoon in Atif Aslam's voice is soothing and is like a treat to the ears. The music of the film is given by Sachin- Jigar. Talk about songs in a Prabhu Deva's film and not talk about him dancing on it is not possible. Jacqueline Fernandez shakes a leg with the legend himself and that does make our feet tap as well.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya has been dragged out of proportion. It is too long to be watched in one go. Many scenes could have been cut short in this long narrative. Gone are the days when audiences could watch such a long film. The story is predictable it has flavors of the days when films like Hum Aapke Hain Kain, Hum Saath Saath Hain were made.
If you decide to watch this film go watch it for the sake of Shruti and if you decide not to go then you are not missing much.

Pratishtha Malhotra.
