New Delhi, Sep 6 (IANS) Marathi film "Mee Sindhutai Sakpal" and Hindi film "Hunterwali" will be screened at the forthcoming Ladakh International Film Festival (LIFF) as part of its focus on women in cinema.

"Mee Sindhutai Sakpal", released in 2010, is a biopic on Sindhutai Sapkal, who became a social activist following her personal traumatic experiences, while the 1935 movie "Hunterwali" is popular for giving the country its first stunt actress, Fearless Nadia. Both focussed on the power of women.

"'Hunterwali' was a pioneering piece of work, featuring the Fearless Nadia as the main protagonist, who fights injustice as the masked crusader. That such a movie was conceived in 1935, with a female lead, is a testament to the contribution of women in Hindi cinema," Melwyn Williams Chirayath, founder, LIFF, said in a statement.

"Similarly the Marathi movie, 'Mee Sindhutai Sakpal' is a brilliant portrayal of a poor village girl, who was married and later abandoned with a daughter at a young age, and who went on to become an effective speaker, raising funds to build shelters for homeless children," he added.

The second edition of LIFF will be held in Leh Sep 13-15.

In addition to the movies in the 'Women in Focus' section, there will also be panel discussion by eminent women film personalities on the theme 'Role of Women in Cinema - On and Off, Road Ahead'.

The participants for the panel discussion will include names like Teri McLuhan, Aparna Sen, Meghna Gulzar, Rekha Bhardwaj, Hannah Fisher and Deepti Naval.
